JQuery is a Javascript framework.  Because it is a set of libraries instead of writing lower-level Javascript code, JQuery is easier to learn and to write than Javascript.  It’s motto is “write less, do more”.

You still need some of the basics of Javascript and CSS in order to learn JQuery.  But after that, it would be okay to progress to JQuery for some of the more sophisticated interactions and animations.

It is certainly easier to use JQuery than Javascript when implementing animations or making AJAX calls, for example.

Another advantage of JQuery is that it takes care cross-browser compatibility issue for you.  JQuery also has a relatively small footprint.

The best way to get started is to download JQuery from jquery.com and go through their tutorials on their site.  Start with the tutorials “Getting Started with jQuery“.

They also have good documentation.
