Add an Image to the Laptop Screen

In the previous lesson, we had extracted this laptop from its background.

In this lesson, we are going to learn how to add the following picture to the laptop screen.

If you want to following along with these two images, simply right-click on them and save them to your disk.

Step 1: Import the scenic-image.jpg

With the laptop photo opened in Fireworks, we do File -> Import and select our scenic-image.jpg file.

Your cursor will become L-shaped prompting you to place the imported image somewhere. Just click anywhere on the laptop photo.

Step 2: Scale the image

The imported scenic image to too big. With the scenic image selected, choose the Scale tool. Drag the upper-left handle in a south-east direction. Note that the Scale tool maintains the proportions of the height and width.

Step 3: Distort Tool

Since our laptop screen is not rectangular, we have to distort our scenic image by using the Distort tool and dragging each of the four corners to their approximate location.

Step 4: Ctrl-Space to Zoom In

To position the corner more precisely, we need to zoom in. Use Ctrl-Space and then drag out a zoom window so that we do not loose our Distort tool. And then you can position the corners more precisely.

Step 5: Decrease Opacity

Depending on your photo, it might happen that the scenic image may look too bright on the dark laptop, giving a somewhat unrealistic feel. If that is the case, you can decrease the opacity slightly of the scenic image to make it blend in better.

And here is the final result...
