Installing Fonts

There are three type of fonts...

Postscript: This is the earliest font type developed by Adobe.
TrueType: This new type came after Postscript and is developed by Microsoft and Apple.
OpenType: This is the newest font type developed by Microsoft and Adobe.

You can find a list of place to get fonts here.

1. We are going to install a TrueType font called "Fajita Mild" on Window XP. The font comes in a zip file as shown.

2. Unzip its content into a temporary folder. You will find a file with the TTF file extension. TTF stands for True Type Font.

3. Use the Start menu to open up your Control Panel. If it looks like this ...

then it is in Category View. Switch to Classic View by clicking the link.

4. While in the Classic View, open the Fonts folder.

5. With the Fonts folder open, select File -> Install New Font...

6. Find and select your font. Click OK.

7. Confirm that you have the font in the Fonts folder.

And that it exists in your favorite application...

8. Now we are going to install an Open Type font called Ondine using a slightly different method. Extract the font as before. We find a file with the OTF file extension as shown in the folder on the right. Since we already have the Fonts folder opened as shown on the left, simply drag the font file to the Fonts folder.

And the font is installed. Once the fonts are installed, you will no longer need the zip file or its extracted contents in the temporary folder.
