Every once in a while ZenCart will release new version, updates, or security patches to the ZenCart software. The updates can be simple change in the shipping modules to reflect new rate changes by the USPS for example. Or it can be a major version upgrade of ZenCart. Or it can be that a security loophole has been discovered in the code and a patch is available to close up the security hole.

ZenCart will post these announcements to the ZenCart forums under "Zen Cart Release Announcements". If you want to get email notification, whenever there is a new post to this thread, you can register to the forum with an username and password, login, and then set up an email subscription to the forum.
