Member-Only Forums:

By default, the public (including non-registered users) can read the posts in the forums. Registered member can post. This is known as the "Registered" forum permission.

However, if you want the forums to be viewed only by registered members, go to Forum Admin -> Permissions and select a forum.

Change the permission from Registered to Registered [Hidden]. Now only registered members can view the posts in this forum. In fact the forum is not even displayed until you log in.

Setting the permission to Private means that even if you are logged in, you can not access the forum unless you have been given permission by administrator. Whether you choose Hidden or not indicates whether that forum is displayed to your or not.
