Learn Not To Spam So You Can Rank High in Google

In the last lesson, you have learned what definitely not to do. In this lesson, you will learn that having excessive advertisment such as popups is not recommended.

If you want to rank high in Google, make sure you do not have a "spammy" site. By "spammy", I mean don't have excessive advertisment or popups. Because Google wants its search results to display sites that are useful to users, sites that are not user-friendly are not ranked high by Google.

Take a l ook at Google's Adsense policy at https://www.google.com/adsense/policies

Under the section "Site Content" it mentions that you site should not have excessive advertistment or popup to such a point that it hampers or annoys the users to such an extent that the site is no longer helpful to the user. You will have to use your judgement as to what is consider excessive. But for me, I do not do any popups.

If you think that the Googlebot can not tell that you are doing popups, think again. If it can understand a HTML anchor tag, it can understand javascript window.open(). Even for the sake of argument that it can not, other human users who came across your site in a search result may report your site through Google's Spam Report Form.

Other webmasters tend not to link to sites that are not in Google's favor. Refer again to the Google policy last paragraph which says that you should avoid linking to "bad neighborhoods" on the web because your PR might be negatively affected. The assumptions is that if you link to "spammy" sites, then you might be a "spammy" site as well. Note that the converse is not necessarily true. Just because a "spammy" site links to you, that does not necessarily mean that you will be penalized. The assumption here is that you have no control over who links to you.
